Department: International Business Development & Venture Fund, AstraZeneca Location: Flexible between two sites — No. 199, Liangjing Road, Zhangjiang High-tech Park, Pudong, Shanghai; or No. 88, North Xizang Road, AstraZeneca R&D China Centre, Jing’an, Shanghai Position Overview We are seeking a highly motivated Intern to support market insights and competitive intelligence across global and China biopharma licensing and M&A activities. This role centers on tracking and synthesizing deal flow, China-related R&D highlights, and commercial market dynamics to inform business development strategy and decision-making. You will gain hands-on experience in market landscaping, benchmarking, and trend analysis while collaborating with AstraZeneca’s BD & R&D network. Highlights of the Opportunity • Mentorship: Work closely with BD professionals to develop rigorous market analysis and CI capabilities. • Exposure: Build a deep understanding of global and China licensing/M&A trends, therapeutic area strategies, China R&D developments, and market dynamics. • Impact: Deliver insights that shape BD priorities, partner outreach, and portfolio strategy. • Skill Development: Strengthen analytical research, data synthesis, dashboarding, and structured communication. Key Responsibilities • Deal Intelligence: Systematically monitor and analyze global and China licensing and M&A transactions, including deal terms, structures, valuations, and strategic rationales; maintain trackers and create concise summaries and benchmarks. • Therapeutic Area Insights: Develop market landscape briefs for priority TAs (e.g., oncology, CVRM, respiratory/immunology), highlighting clinical and commercial dynamics relevant to BD. • China R&D Highlights: Track China-originated assets, pivotal trial readouts, NMPA regulatory updates, and emerging platforms; assess potential global relevance and partnering opportunities. • Competitive Intelligence: Profile key companies and assets; compare pipelines, clinical progress, and partnering activity; identify whitespace and differentiation opportunities. • Commercial Landscape: Analyze market size, growth drivers, pricing/reimbursement, access trends, and competitive positioning for selected indications/assets in China and globally. • Insight Packaging: Prepare slide decks, newsletters, and short memos that clearly communicate findings, implications, and recommended focus areas for BD. • Data Tools & Automation: Leverage public datasets and AI/ML-enabled monitoring to scale scanning and alerting; ensure data quality and reproducibility. • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Liaise with BD & Venture Fund, R&D, and commercial stakeholders to align insight priorities and validate assumptions. Working Time • Working days per week: ≥3 days (5 days preferred); onsite in Shanghai preferred. • Internship duration: ≥3 months preferred. Position Requirements • Education: Pursuing a PhD or MBA in life sciences, business, economics, or a related field; candidates with Computer Science/data science backgrounds and strong biopharma interest are encouraged. • Experience: Prior internship/work experience in consulting, investment banking, healthcare VC/PE, pharma (BD/strategy/CI), or AI/ML/data analysis is highly preferred; familiarity with biopharma deal databases and public sources is a plus. • Skills: o Analytical rigor in market sizing, benchmarking, and trend synthesis. o Structured communication with excellent English writing and presentation skills; Mandarin proficiency beneficial for China sources. o Data handling using Excel/Sheets; visualization tools (e.g., PowerPoint) and basic scripting/automation an advantage. o Independence and collaboration, with strong attention to detail and objectivity.
